Recently, Team Mill House volunteered to be a building crew with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County. We armed ourselves with hammers, nails and lots of sunscreen as we learned about building a house from the ground up. Habitat is a great organization whose staff and volunteers work tirelessly for the greater good of our community. Habitat of Orange County helps “families in need build and own quality, affordable homes in safe and supportive communities.” Mill House was happy to be a small part in helping build this one house for Habitat in our community.
Although some of the Mill House team had worked with Habitat before, several had only swung a hammer to hang a picture. By the end of the day, however, we were all pros at driving nails (no matter how many swings it took). We spent the morning framing walls, attaching plywood sheathing and later the outer insulation. The walls were built on the ground, so the last steps were to lift the walls, make sure they were plumb and then secure them to the bottom plate. It took the whole Mill House team (plus a few others who were spending their Friday morning with Habitat) but we finally raised the walls. Even though it was a small portion of the overall house we all felt a sense of pride in our accomplishment.
Habitat for Humanity of Orange County can always use more volunteers even if you have only a few hours to give! Visit their website, www.orangehabitat.org , to learn more about how you can support your community.
