Mill House Properties has renovated many houses over the years. Most of these properties were in very bad shape and needed complete renovation. Below are some of our past projects with before and after photos.

Isle of Rest, VA
The Isle of Rest Plantation in Mecklenberg County, Virginia was once a 4,000 acre working plantation that stretched along the banks of the Roanoke River.

Tales passed down from generation to generation speak of a powerful and thriving plantation of cattle, cotton, a fishery and the first water powered saw mill in the state.

The original house and out buildings were all built with timber from the plantation. The buildings are thought to date back to the early 1800's…the grand main house, a plantation office, detached kitchen, wash house, three barns, chicken coop, a manager's house and an ice house built underground, among others. The main house burned to the ground in the early 1860's. The accounts of the house fire vary from being struck by lightning to speculation that the house was torched during a raid by Union troops. Even though it was during the early part of the Civil War many family members and locals agree that the theory of the house being struck by lightning is more likely.

700 North Greensboro St   Carrboro, NC  27510
The grass was a foot high and vines crawled along the side of the house and in through windows. A blue tarp covered half the roof and piles of junk were strewn around the yard. The five-foot tall windows that flanked the six-panel door at the front porch and the thick columns showed its classic style. I had driven by the old house a hundred times and each time I thought how great it could be if someone would renovate it.

1 Cobb Terrace   Chapel Hill, NC  27514
It was back in 1915 when Collier Cobb, a professor of geology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, saw potential in the sloping and rutted land at the end of Henderson Street. At the time, Henderson Street only extended one block past Franklin Street, and just beyond that was a bit of land where dirt from excavation sites around town was brought and dumped.

This completely renovated home maintains the charm of the original 1940's structure with updates for the 21st century family. The home features a re-styled entrance with a landscaped retaining wall, stone walkway and portico to welcome visitors. The first floor maintains much of the original layout with 2BR's, a bath, LR, DR and kitchen, however a sunroom and access to the covered screened porch was added. Upstairs features a Master Suite with jetted tub, separate shower and double vanity. The fourth bedroom, half bath and office space complete the second floor.

1000 Virgie Street   Durham, NC  27707
This 1925 mill house was condemned by the city and was left to rot away. Many interested buyers wanted to raze the house and replace it with a modular home. Mill House saw potential in the 11 foot ceiling and rough-hewn siding.

The house is located on a large lot one block from Ninth St. and the well-known Magnolia Grill Restaurant. The great location and the charm of the old home, no matter how bad it looked, it was the perfect Mill House project.

3 Rogerson Drive   Chapel Hill, NC  27517
Originally built in 1941 this house had been left empty for ten years by the owner who moved on to a nursing home. The half-acre lot and unique English cottage style home needed upgrading in all areas and simply a creative touch in others.

Mill House converted the old screen porch into a wonderful breakfast nook with casement windows all around. A large deck off the back made use of the backyard that had been neglected for years. A stone walkway and wrought iron arbor invites visitors into the newly renovated home.
